This project aims at implementing a multidimensional public sensitization campaign to raise awareness of the urgent need for peace in South Kordofan and to promote action for peaceful coexistence. It also seeks to put people from South Kordofan in direct contact with those in Khartoum; reflect public messages supporting peace from both locations, and sensitize people in South Kordofan and Khartoum to Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR), Community Security and Small Arms Control (CSAC) and women’s rights. Main activities include a multi-media outreach campaign, a large free concert to be held in Khartoum on 30th August and community outreach comprising theatre, community radio and public events in five places in South Kordofan. The project hopes to contribute to a more vibrant, outward-looking, informed and peaceful cultural scene in Sudan.

Commissioned by the World Bank Group, this study seeks to present an analysis on the key conflict drivers in a post-referendum Sudan, and present programming recommendations to inform the Interim Strategy Note (ISN) of the World Bank Sudan Country Office for the FY 2013-2014. The study will examine four pre-identified inter-related topics which will form the pillars for the ISN and identify the associated conflict risk, as well as potential risk-mitigating measures or peace-building prospects they may offer.

The main purpose of this project is to provide information about coverage of gender issues and about the coverage and response to gender across the Sudanese media, both thematically and through assessing the gender-balance in the media sector; the finding will be used to encourage media to follow the values of diversity, human rights, equality and rule of law in their coverage and provide space and support for other actors to do the same; and to create a foundation of research on which to build advocacy and strategic programme development; as well as this project aims to pilot the first regional use of the Media Monitoring Africa’s gender monitoring database, with a view to a long-term Arabisation and dissemination of these tools.

Key activities:
In this project the monitors will monitor the main Sudanese media outlets, using a range of methods to evaluate the media performance. The project team will develop the monitoring methodology, which will include: quantitative methodology, qualitative methodology, monitoring the offensive language as well they will work to develop methodology of the agenda-setting. As well the team will design the monitoring database, thus selecting a sample of the media outlets to be monitored which will include press, TV, and radio. Regular reports will be produced and disseminated to relevant partners, an evaluation report with recommendations on how monitoring gender coverage will be developed.

Project/Activity brief and purpose:
The purpose of the project is to provide management and delivery services to running a competition of business ideas generated by youth in each of the three states of North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Blue Nile State. The business ideas competition comes as part of the wider Joint Programme (JP) “Creating Opportunities for Youth Employment in Sudan” being implemented by UNDP and eleven UN and UN affiliated organizations (UNIDO, ILO, UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO, FAO, UNOPS, UNFPA, IOM, UNAIDS, UNV) and their relevant national counterparts. This project is directed at linking youth with employment opportunities including self-employment through the distribution of start-up micro grants via a business idea competition for young entrepreneurs.

Key activities:
The project is divided into 4 major stages which fit into a 6 months long timeframe. Firstly, project inception involves a kick-off meeting with UNDP and undertaking feasibility assessments for the competition to be carried out in each of the three states. Partners and members of the awards selection committees are also to be identified during the start-up stage. A second stage involves launching the competition and a campaign, registering participants and receiving business ideas from the competitors,. Thirdly, the winners are chosen and an award ceremony to recognize the business ideas is held in each state. The last stage involves the delivery of awards (in-kind) values at SDG5700 per business idea to each winner.

This project plans to support the recovery of Darfur and the Three Areas which represent the most war-affected regions of the Sudan. Following a basic approach epitomized by ‘Development for Peace’ the key objective of the project is to “Promote a peaceful coexistence between divergent groups in some of these areas” by undertaking development activities which would address conflict over livestock routes and natural resources, lack of employment and limited income generating activities. Project beneficiaries include farmers and nomads along a number of transhumance routes; women and youth and the wider communities in the target areas.

Usratuna Sudanese Association for Disabled Children was established in 2000 as a provider of crucial assistance to the disabled children of Omdurman. Since then the organization has gradually expanded their mandate geographically, and taken the charge of the management and organizing of projects. SUDIA was contracted by USADC’s principal donor La Nostra Famiglia (OVCI) to undertake a review of the work and internal functioning of USADC, and facilitate a strategic planning exercise with the organization’s members and stakeholders. The ultimate purpose of this intervention is to assist USADC achieve greater financial and programmatic sustainability.

Project/Activity brief and purpose:
The overall aim of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction and improve the overall quality of life amongst displaced and low-income families in the suburbs of Khartoum and in rural areas in North Kordofan State. The project will provide access to credit on the basis of Islamic lending practices, namely ‘murabaha’ for increasing family incomes through income generating activities and self-employment opportunities.
