Fieldwork for the Youth Employment Survey has been completed in the three states of N.Kordofan, S. Kordofan and Blue Nile States. Four-member teams worked during the two weeks of May 20 – June 3 undertaking group-discussions with youths, running in-depth interviews with employer organizations, training providers, youth-employment programs and agencies and labor office representatives in each of the three states.

A one day state economic profiling workshop with participation from different stakeholders at the state level was also facilitated and used to shed light on the declining vs. expanding economic sub-sectors in each of the three states over the past 5 years.

Initial findings indicate that self-employment represents a practical solution to counter the rising problem of youth unemployment in the three Northern States of South Kordofan, North Kordofan and Blue Nile State. Moreover, technical and vocational training institutions are in place throughout the three states, however, in most cases these institutions are in dire need of upgrading their physical infrastructure, their training equipment and their curriculum. These technical schools when adequately rehabilitated will ensure a steady supply of young and skilled workers with vocations that are suited to the local demands of the markets in each of the three states.

The next stage in the survey will be to prepare the three states=specific reports and hold a one-day workshop to be co-organized with the UNDP and the Ministry of Youth Culture & Sports (MoYCS) in Khartoum to discuss and validate the findings of the survey.
