Gender and Media Monitoring Workshop successfully conducted
Sunday, January 22, 2012

From the 16th to the 19th of January, SUDIA hosted an inspiring workshop at the HQ. The research manager of SUDIA’s international partner Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), Samuel Wellington Radu, came to share his knowledge and tailor their methodology for the Sudanese context. Journalists, civil society activists and media monitors spent four days discussing the best way to incorporate the gender related issues of Sudan into the MMA framework. Media Monitoring Africa has had gender on the agenda for years and raising such sensitive topics here in Sudan was a very positive experience. Important questions were asked and current problems and challenges discussed. From the brainstorming about the meaning of the word ‘gender’ it became clear that people tend to think that ‘gender’ mainly evolves around women’s issues. Identity, stigmatization, stereotyping and neglect were among other topics debated in depth. Group work sessions resulted in eye-opening and interesting presentations. In the end a methodology for monitoring Sudanese media was successfully developed by the joined efforts of all participants.
