The main purpose of this project is to provide information about coverage of gender issues and about the coverage and response to gender across the Sudanese media, both thematically and through assessing the gender-balance in the media sector; the finding will be used to encourage media to follow the values of diversity, human rights, equality and rule of law in their coverage and provide space and support for other actors to do the same; and to create a foundation of research on which to build advocacy and strategic programme development; as well as this project aims to pilot the first regional use of the Media Monitoring Africa’s gender monitoring database, with a view to a long-term Arabisation and dissemination of these tools.
Key activities:
In this project the monitors will monitor the main Sudanese media outlets, using a range of methods to evaluate the media performance. The project team will develop the monitoring methodology, which will include: quantitative methodology, qualitative methodology, monitoring the offensive language as well they will work to develop methodology of the agenda-setting. As well the team will design the monitoring database, thus selecting a sample of the media outlets to be monitored which will include press, TV, and radio. Regular reports will be produced and disseminated to relevant partners, an evaluation report with recommendations on how monitoring gender coverage will be developed.
